Belmore Falls

On this extremely hot 40℃ autumn day, we decided to walk off the beaten track, down to Belmore Falls, at Morton National Park.

First we made a quick trip to the Hindmarsh Lookout for a view over Kangaroo Valley.

Then we walked along Belmore Falls Lookout Track to this point, where we needed to jump the fence to continue.

The track itself was narrow but very clear and well defined as it was an old official walking track. The track is closed now, probably due to safety risks and rock falls in the area. There were two signs to prevent you from going down this track, so you will need to proceed at your own risk.

There were some fallen trees on the track which we needed to climb over or crawl under. Some parts of the track were a bit muddy. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the waterfall.

It hadn't rained for a while so the waterfall did not look as impressive as last time we were there. However, that also meant walking across the creek bed was easy as it was pretty much dry. We cooled off in the pool underneath the first waterfall. The water was freezing as it doesn't get much sunlight. It was a nice contrast to the heat of the air temperature.

After a short snack, we walked across the creek bed to the other side and continued our walk. The track was narrow initially, then there was a steep downhill to the bottom of another waterfall. The track was overgrown, hard to navigate, so you could easily get lost. Only attempt this if you are confident walking in the bush and have good navigational skills.

Belmore Falls consists of three drops on to Barrengarry Creek. We tried to get to the bottom of the second waterfall but we couldn't find the track and ended up at the bottom of the third fall.

After a bit of rock hoping we got closer to the third waterfall where there was a smaller pool underneath it. It was so quiet and peaceful down there. We explored the surroundings and took some photos.

We heard a rock fall on the opposite side while we were down there. I could not see how big the rock was but the loud echoing sound of the rock was enough to make me want to get out of there fast.

We began our ascend up to where we started. It was a hard climb due to the heat.

After we got back to Belmore Falls Lookout Track, we continued on the track to Belmore Falls Lookout. It sure looked very different to last time we were here after a week of heavy rain. However, if we were to walk down to the waterfall last time, the track would have been very muddy and crossing the creek bed with the gushing water would have been very dangerous.

It was such a serene and pretty place at the bottom of both falls we visited. It is such a shame that the track is closed off for people to explore, but I can also understand how the track can be dangerous for people who are not prepared for the condition of the day.

Total distance: 2.9km
Climb: 450m
Difficulty: Medium
