Tasmania Trip Day 3 - Cradle Mountain

The day started with a terrible thunderstorm early in the morning. I was wondering if we could make it to any of the walks today. Luckily the rain stopped before we left our cottage.

If you followed the post for Tasmania Trip Day 2 and remembered the picture of the Dove Lake, the lake today looked like this....

If you asked me, what's the difference? Then let me remind you what the photo looked like yesterday......

With the obvious difference in the lake colour, where did the mountain peaks go?? This will be interesting as our plan today was to climb Cradle Mountain Summit.

The route we were planning to take today is from Dove Lake car park to Wombat Pool,  Crater Lake, Marion Lookout, Kitchen Hut, Cradle Mountain Summit, Face Track to Hansons Peak, Lake Rodway Track, and back to the Dove Lake car park. As you can see from the photo, the day was very miserable, with a little bit of rain, and lots of clouds. We decided to see how far we can get.

The 3D map below shows that the route involves a fair bit of climbing.

Although the weather wasn't great, but the walk and the scenery was still beautiful at the beginning of our walk.

Wombat Pool became Wombat Poo over time. Not sure if it's human or nature cause?

Lovely view of Crater Lake, but you can see we were getting closer to the clouds.

And Finally we made it to Marion's Lookout!!!! Great view of nothing but whiteness. I guess it felt like heaven.

We walked past Kitchen Hut, a cute shelter, but sadly there were no kitchen equipment inside. It's a nice place to rest and hide from the cold and the wind. A few people were taking a break inside and having lunch, but it was too dark for me.

We arrived at the turnoff to Cradle Mountain Summit. Although we were advised not to do this walk if it's wet, we thought we will attempt it and see how far we can go. As you can see from the photo, you can't see very far ahead. Once again, where was the summit/peak?

Sadly we only made it half way and the wind was too strong and our visual was getting worse and worse as we climbed higher. It was a tough call as some of us wanted to continue, and some don't.

Very steep decline.

Total distance: 12.5km
Climb: 655m
Difficulty: Hard

We got back early enough for BBQ. Definitely deserve all the protein after a day of hard work.

Pity about the weather but it was a different experience of walking in the clouds. I need to come back to complete the walk up Cradle Mountain Summit.
