Muogamara National Reserve
Muogamara National Reserve lies between the outer Sydney suburb of Cowan and Hawkesbury River. It only opens to the public for 6 weekends each year in spring in order to preserve the fragile ecosystems and Aboriginal heritage of this nature reserve. Spring brings out the beauty of blossoming wildflowers.
We started the day with breakfast at Pie in the Sky, just across the road of the entrance of Muogamarra National Reserve.
Before 9am there were already a line of cars waiting to get into the reserve. Once the gate opened we joined the line and the slow traffic towards the Information Centre. It was a long narrow road and I wondered how oncoming cars are meant to go pass us. Lucky we didn't have to worry about that.
Once we get into the National Reserve, there were rangers giving information, directing you to parking spots, and taking entry fees of course. $10 for adult, $5 for child, and $25 per family of 2 adults and 3 school age children. You cannot use the National Park passes. We then had to register our car with which walk we intended to do.
We started the walk passing JD Tipper lookout, which is only minutes away from the Information Centre, with views over Hawkesbury River.
We then turned off to Peats Bight track. It is a 10km return walk, graded hard, probably just due to the steep climb back and few creek crossings. It passes through Peats Crater, a site of early farm settlement, and passes through rainforest and mangrove environments.
We then did Lloyd Trig track, a 3.5km walk, graded medium, with a climb up a rock to a view over the Hawksbury River.
The next one is Deerubbin Lookover, 6km return walk, graded medium, reaching a rock shelter with a view above Hawkesbury River.
The last track we did was Point Loop Walk, 2km and graded easy, with views over Peats Crater, Bar Island, Berowra Creek and the Hawkesbury River.
Along the tracks there were rangers to help you with direction, information and answer questions. There were plenty of lovely flowers blossoming.
Overall a very nice day out. The walks were not too difficult and the tracks were well preserved. The recommended time they gave for each tracks were way too generous.
