Escape Room - The Enigma Room

With all the hype around the escape room game concept, we thought we would give it a try.

Being a very competitive person, even thought I don't show it, I really hate losing. I was concerned that I wouldn't be smart enough for the game and we would fail to escape the room. Luckily, escape rooms are designed for team work, and I have a relatively intelligent husband and friends to back me up.

First, finding this place was not as straight forward as there were no signs outside the building. We needed to ring the bell and someone open the door for us. We went up stair to a small waiting room when a host explained the game to us.

We had a choice of standard mode (where we can ask for help and the host will also send automatic help when he/she see fits) or the hard mode (where we can ask for help but the host won't send automatic helps). Although we really wanted to tackle the hard mode, but since it was our first escape room, the host recommended trying standard mode first.

We did the Dr Disaster room. It started with a video clip to get us into the mood. Then we were locked up in a small room until time is up or until we escape. Unfortunately the room does not have an ensuite so we were advised to go to the toilet first.

Dr Disaster was an evil dictator who had built a hidden missile facility and held the world at ransom. Our mission, should we choose to accept it (I guess we accept since we paid for it), was to solve the clues and puzzles in the launch facility to gain access to the control panel and save the world within 60 minutes.

The theme had the feel of Mission Impossible (without the crazy stunts) and James Bond (without the cool suit and gadgets).

When the game started I felt like I was just walking around, not knowing where to start. Looking at everything there just in case it had some significance later. Once we got into the swing of the game, it flowed more easily.

The puzzles were really interesting and it really got us interacting, working together, throwing ideas around. Everything fits together.

We escaped in 57 minutes and 10 seconds with a few helps, which apparently was better than 70% of people who did the same room. I was glad we tried the standard mode this time to get a hang of how to tackle the puzzles and the way of thinking for these games. It also gave us a boost of confidence to try more escape rooms.

We were really proud of our achievement. Now we are addicted to escape room and looking at where to try next.
